Research project

Maritime Endangered Archaeology (MarEA)

Project overview

Maritime Endangered Archaeology (MarEA) research project aims to document cultural heritage in the coastal, near shore and underwater zone across the MENA region. Sites are documented through the use of remote sensing satellite imagery and extant publications and data is uploaded to an open access database which is used by a range of scholars, as well as regional heritage managers, to assess sites in coastal and maritime areas, many of which are previously unrecorded.

The database can be used to manage, monitor and assess threats to maritime cultural heritage in the Endangered Archaeology of the Middle East and North Africa (EAMENA) region, and to help decision-making surrounding where to focus resources for preservation or protection. This is a particularly valuable resource for countries that previously had no national heritage inventory.
