Our group uses both chemical glycobiology and structural enzymology to understand carbohydrate processing enzymes and the roles they play in living organisms.
Glycosylation and neurodegeneration
Irregular patterns of glycosylation in humans, caused by defective or absent carbohydrate processing enzymes, drives several neurodegenerative disorders. Our group looks at how these enzymes function as to provide fundamental insights into the underlying biology of disease progression, and to enable the design of chemical tools for research and therapeutic applications.
Fundamental Glycobiology of Signalling Networks
We are also exploring how glycobiology interfaces with regulatory machinery in the cell to modulate development, interactions, and stress responses.

Biography
2023-now: Anniversary Prize Senior Research Fellow at the ÃÛÌÒTV.
2018-2022: Research Fellow at the York Structural Biology Laboratories under the supervision of Prof. Gideon Davies. Here, Richard worked on carbohydrate-processing enzymes involved in human disease, with emphasis on neurodegenerative disorders.
2013-2018: PhD Student at the University of Birmingham under the guidance of Prof. Andrew Lovering. His PhD project looked at cell signalling pathways controlled by c-di-GMP in Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus.
