Alex Cattrell is a Postgraduate research student for Engineering and Physical Sciences at the ÃÛÌÒTV.

Rogue waves are a rare but extremely hazardous oceanic phenomenon. Improved understanding through accident reanalysis, experimental testing and numerical modelling may lead to their prediction and the improvement of safety at sea.

Research interests

I am interested in the novel applications of oceanographic data to optimise the maritime industry.

I have looked at optimising transocean shipping routes using high spatial resolution global ocean circulation models that are run in house at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton.

I am investigating rare, yet extremely hazardous, rogue (freak) waves for my cross-faculty Ph.D supported by the Southampton Marine Maritime Institute (SMMI).
